About
What is it?
A project that brought cinema culture where it didn’t exist.
Cinematopedia empowers 5 local communities from suburban and rural areas from 4 countries (Italy, Greece, France, Lithuania) and enhances local cultural life and social inclusion through the creation of innovative cultural hubs around cinema through the combination of offline and online methods.
The project did not aim to provide cinema experiences for an audience but co-create cultural experiences based on cinema with the audience and involve it in many different pro-active ways. Weekly cinema clubs were organized in every participating community and more than (totally) 100 screenings were organized. The screenings included diverse content (films, documentaries, heritage films etc), mainly European.
Cinematopedia, coordinated by a youth cultural association, engaged actively young people in cinemas and scheduled for this purpose various activities including the creation of youth ambassadors for cinemas, the curation of part of the screenings from the part of a group of young people, the development of educational activities in schools (including the creation of short movies and the organization of virtual screenings etc). The project also involved local communities in the organization of activities aiming to promote local cultural heritage through cinema. This was achieved through the supporting of the creation of small documentaries on local cultural heritage and through the supporting of digital placemaking.
The development of localized mini-networks between cultural organisations was also supported. Due to the covid19 experience the project aimed to create cinema going experiences based on a blend between physical and online activities (including virtual screenings, online discussions, e-learning courses etc) and for this reason, it has developed a cooperation with VOD platforms. Finally, the project gave particular focus to education activities that lead to the creation of short films from the members of the community.
